Issued to commemorate the presentation of the First Annual Paul Robeson Award to South African poet and activist-in-exile Dennis Brutus
by Governor Robert P. Casey in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 8, 1989. A vigorous opponent of apartheid, Brutus was banned in 1961,
arrested in 1963, shot in the back while trying to escape, imprisoned on Robben Island, and exiled in 1966.
